No one could have prepared me for the sadness and isolation of the urban community assigned to me as an AmeriCorps member. Many of the children didn't even know each other. Fear of crime and violence kept them locked behind their own doors-- prisoners of their environment. Then we started our after-school programs...and you can see the difference!
