Build a garden build a better life!
Many children do not know where their food comes from, often they reply “the store” when queried about food origins. With the steady climb in obesity rates in the US it is important to empower children to make healthy choice when choosing food. The Boys & Girls club of Weld County serves families from many different ethnic backgrounds. As an Americorps volunteer I have developed the summer gardening program which not only introduces the US born children to gardening and food origins, it introduces the immigrant children to the foods they now find on their lunch plates. Teaching children to appreciate a wide variety of food and giving them the skills to produce it, will decrease their likelihood of falling into poor eating habits which contribute to obesity.
