For my Americorps service, I teach 1st grade to newcomer refugees in Denver. My students are from Burma, Nepal, Somalia, Eritrea, Ethiopia, the Congo, Rwanda . . . anywhere there has been major conflict and displaced people. My students come to me with no English and no school experience, but by the end of the year they are comfortable little chatterboxes. During my time teaching, I did many home visits and was warmly accepted into several communities. I got to experience a Burmese wedding (one of my students' sisters), and LOTS of good food.
