Helping Refugees Learn Technology and a New Culture

During my 2011-2012 state term in AmeriCorps, we held classes twice a weak to teach refugees the basics of computers. The refugees were mostly from Bhutan, but we had a handful from other countries including Iraq. The couple pictured are from Iraq and Ethiopia. When we started, the class occurred once a week. We added a second class period since we experienced up to 40 students in the first few weeks. Many of our students spoke little to no English. This was certainly a challenge since our teachers did not speak Nepali. However, by the Summer of 2012, many in this group had learned how to turn on the computer, left and right click, scroll, open a program by double clicking, and type. Many typed their own name and address; others asked to type something from a printout or magazine. By March, we adventured to teach them how to make a powerpoint presentation. This picture features the beginning of the process of learning.
