Westway WHO? Westway WHALES! This is the cheer we yelped at the end of every day last year in Federal Way, Washington. Along side six absolutely amazing volunteers, I worked in an after-school program serving elementary students living below, or well below the poverty line. AmeriCorps works by bringing people together. It works building relationships, solving algebra problems and listening to the joke of the day. AmeriCorps works because is reinforces itself. Being kind, being honest, and being helpful is not only good to those you encounter, but it is good for yourself. Never have I felt as satisfied, productive and truly content as when I was working at Westway. These students, and volunteers, changed my life for the better giving me purpose, positivity and total joy. AmeriCorps, put simply, works.
