Firelines Form When Americorps Works

As an Americorps NCCC member coming to Joplin, MO directly after the devastating May 2011 tornado hit the city, morale was low everywhere, and how could it not be? Thousands of people were without their homes and their livelihood, while hundreds more perished in the disaster. What struck the community and us Corps members more than the devastation was the amount of volunteers that showed up from all over the country to offer their hands to assist in rebuilding the city. This pictured contains two NCCC members who lead a group of volunteers in the cleaning up of a property , specifically moving the remnants of a fallen chimney from the back of the property out to the front where debris collectors could pick it up. The afternoon was a hot and humid one, and as energy waned among the volunteers, one of the Americorps members suggested a fireline should be formed in order to get everybody's hands working and expedite the process of relocating the chimney. Amid a background of destruction, this picture truly depicts how Americorps works: bringing together people from various communities the world over to participate in serving his and her fellow man in the shadow of disaster. Man truly is a miracle unto his fellow man.
